Say It Ain’t So – My Letter to Lost

Dear Lost,

I’ve stuck with you since day one. I’ve been with you through polar bears and smoke monsters. I put up with time travel. Flashbacks. Flashforwards. Flash sideways. Numerous plane crashes (at least three that I can count), hydrogen bombs, submarines, mysterious numbers, hatches, caves, births, deaths, poisonous spiders and just so much more. But as your time is running out, I am getting quite frustrated with you.

This last season of Lost feels like it’s been a complete change from the previous seasons. While you’ve given us lots of mysteries as well as twists and turns, you’ve also given us stories of courage, love, and friendship. And that’s what I’ve tuned in for. Well, the mysteries, too!

I realize you’re a fictional TV show, but like any good TV show, the characters and show become something we can believe in. In the beginning, I loved your show. I watched every episode, all the specials, read online articles about what (supposedly) all of the mysteries meant, and how the characters are intertwined (and I’ve always loved how you intertwined characters backstories). And I thought your writers always gave us loyal viewers what we deserved with more characters, more mysteries and questions, never truly answering any of the questions. But after the episode on March 23, I felt cheated. With so few episodes left, it seems that you are trying to wrap up too many storylines in a short amount of time.

The March 23 episode finally gave us the back-story of Richard, who we’ve seen on and off the island over many, many years (50+ years). He’s been a central figure in bringing some of the main characters to the island, including Locke and Juliette. But I think your writers tied up how Richard got to the island, how the Black Rock got to the island, and how the statue on the edge of the island got broke – all in one episode poorly. Yes, we’ve all been waiting for answers on these things, but I was hoping for better answers. (Spoiler alert). But to tell us Richard came over on the Black Rock, a slave ship, back in 1867 through a storm that created waves so high, the wooden pirate ship cracked an enormous cement statute?? Well, it just felt too simple.

With the end approaching on May 23, I do hope the characters will get the fate and futures they deserve, and us loyal viewers get the ending we deserve.

Thanks Lost for listening (or reading),

Steve

Cupid’s Stay At Home Plan…Movies and Great Meals

Has the panic set in yet?  Valentine’s Day is just around the corner, exactly six days from today to be correct.  If you have been saving up your money for a really nice gift and don’t have a lot left over for the rest of the day, let me offer up some ideas to complete your Valentine’s Day experience for your special loved one(s).

With the Kids

I am sure this is one of the hardest days to find a babysitter and yet you still want to make it special.  Well, why not include the kids in the love festivities.

For a great start to the day, why not make Mom breakfast in bed.  Cooking and kitchen not in your vocabulary?  Not to worry.  If your Mom loves pancakes, your local supermarket will carry an instant pancake mix container that all you have to do is add the water and shake.  No measuring required.  Cook the pancakes and plate them.  Pour some milk or orange juice in a champagne glass for the added touch of elegance and add a bud vase with a rose to complete the look.

For lunchtime, why not create your own pizza parlor right in your kitchen.  In the same trip that you make to the supermarket, you can find the ingredients to make your own personalized pizzas.  Grab the sauce and dough in the pasta section, head over to the meat section for your meat choices, then the dairy section for your cheeses.  At home, you can even cut the pizzas out in heart shapes for an added touch.

Throughout the day, why not make it a movie day in your family room.  Here are some of my all-time favorite children’s movies that I still love watching:

  • Be My Valentine, Charlie Brown
  • Shrek
  • Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (Any Disney movie works really)

Romantic Evening At Home

Setting the mood is the most important piece of the title, “romantic.”  Typically candles and flowers work really well but don’t just lump them all in one place.  If you are having dinner at home, make sure to set the table.  Don’t think that eating in front of the TV qualifies as being romantic.  Put in one of your significant other’s favorite CDs to help with the dinner ambiance.  Want to try your hand at cooking the meal?  Again, the supermarket offers a number of frozen selections that even someone who doesn’t know how to use the oven would be able to cook.  Don’t want to try your hand at cooking, then order out your favorites for a special meal.  After dinner, why not put in a movie to complete the evening.  When I tried compiling my list of movies that fit the Valentine’s Day theme, I could go on and on.  Here are some of my favorites:

Romantic Comedies

  • Down To You
  • 50 First Dates
  • How To Lose A Guy in 10 Days

Drama

  • Jerry Maguire
  • Serendipity
  • Hope Floats

 Timeless

  • William Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet (Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes)
  • Titanic

Action

  • Mr. and Mrs. Smith
  • Fast and the Furious
  • Gone in 60 Seconds

What are some of your favorite movies to watch on Valentine’s Day?  If you have any other ideas on how to make the day special and unique, I would love to hear them.

My Holiday Movie Favorites

Looking for a holiday movie to watch with the family this holiday season but not sure what to watch?  Whether you are looking for a hardy classic or one with a modern twist, my list has something for everyone to enjoy.

 A Christmas Story (1983)

Put away the iPods and game systems and reflect upon simpler times where nostalgia reigns supreme.  Many can relate to this special story of a boy who is on a quest to persuade all those around him that a Red Ryder BB gun is the perfect toy to receive for Christmas.  As the story unfolds, the joys of the family dysfunction and irony in this post World War II humorous tale will delight all.  After watching this enduring comedy, it will definitely spark some good conversations about Christmas past, present and future.

 Home Alone (1990)

Stuck at home this holiday season?  Why not live through the McCallister’s who decide to take the entire family to France for Christmas.  Oops, did I say the entire family?  Not quite.  They forgot their eight-year old son, Kevin at home.  He’s left alone in a big house without realizing that a pair of burglars has set their sights on robbing his family’s house.  Watch Kevin do his best to outwit the bumbling burglars.

 It’s A Wonderful Life (1946)

This movie has stood the test of time and for good reason.  It depicts what the real meaning of the Christmas Spirit is all about.  George Bailey is a good man who sacrificed his dreams to establish his roots in his hometown.  He falls on some hard times which lead to some hard decisions to be made.  George is visited by Clarence, a visitor who shows him what life would be like if he did not exist.  I saw this movie for the first time last year (shocker especially since it is played every year on the major broadcast networks) and cried like a baby.  Gather your family and friends and watch this beautiful story unfold before your eyes.

 Elf (2003)

Who says an elf can’t be six-feet tall?  One Christmas evening, Buddy, a human child, is accidentally transported to the North Pole when he happens to crawl into Santa’s toy sack.  He grows up being groomed as an elf but always felt like he just didn’t fit in.  One day he has a revelation and decides that he must find his real father.  Will Farrell is a perfect fit in this family comedy.

 Miracle on 34th Street (1947)

Do you believe in Santa Claus?  Doris, a single mother and a Macy’s store supervisor, finds the perfect job applicant to play Santa this year.  He mysteriously goes by Kris Kringle, takes up residence with her smitten neighbor and talks about being the real Santa.  Talk about taking your job a little too seriously!  Kris has everyone’s best interest at heart by playing matchmaker and winning over Doris’ skeptical daughter.  Reality tries to spoil it by proving that Kris may be legally insane.  Will he prevail?  Watch this classic for a surprise ending.

There you have it, my top five holiday movies.  It was very tough narrowing it down to just five but these are my must see.  I would love to hear your favorite movies that you and your family enjoy during this time.
