Well it has been just over a year now since we moved to the new WOW! Mail product and the usage of email online (webmail) has really increased. We have received some great feedback and we will continue to look for ways to improve the product.
One of the ways we are improving the product is by updating to the latest version available to us. Since new releases of software usually have bugs when they are first released, we wait until a few of the earlier versions are released before we decide to do an upgrade to our system. This allows any issues with the new release to be worked out before we present it to customers. We also do rigorous testing to ensure that everything works the way we want it to. As a result we will be releasing a newer version of WOW! Mail around the mid-April timeframe. Besides fixing the minor known bugs in the current version there will also be some new features that will provide a better experience when using WOW! Mail. Some of the new email features will be:
- Read receipts- you will have the option to enable/disable read receipts. This feature is requested by users on a regular basis.
- Tabbed email compose – the compose tab will now be its own tab instead of replacing the inbox tab when composing an email. This will make moving between the inbox and composing much faster. It also provides the ability to compose multiple messages at the same time. Simply select to compose a new message and a new tab will open.
- Three pane reading view – there will be an additional option for the reading pane to be displayed on the right now. The reading pane options will be – off, at the bottom, and on the right.
In the Calendar section the new features will be:
- Fish-Eye View – from the month view you will be able to click on a date and zoom into the calendar entries for that particular day.
- List View – this feature allows you to view 2 weeks of appointments in a list view.
Look for these new email features to arrive around the middle of April and stay tuned for even more improvements to WOW! Mail and your WOW! Customer Home Page this summer.

In today’s world of internet connected devices, home networking is becoming a required part of your high-speed internet service. Home networking lets you use your internet connection on all of your computers in the home as well as allowing file sharing, internet access for gaming consoles, and even for connectivity to a centrally located printer. And, with the wireless home networking solution from WOW!, all of your computers are protected behind the built-in firewall included with the service. This will prevent unauthorized users, or hackers, from accessing your computers.
Did you recently buy a new computer and now have an extra desktop computer that you want your children to use but there is no connection for an Ethernet cable in the room you are moving the computer to? With WOW! home networking it is no problem. Simply add a USB wireless adapter available from WOW! or from your local retailer and put the computer anywhere in the home you like. Do you have a laptop computer that you bring home from work that has a wireless adapter? Simply connect it to the wireless connection on your WOW! home network to get online. Did you recently buy a Wii, Playstation 3, or other wireless enabled game system? (Please note that Xbox requires a wireless adapter from Microsoft.) Connecting game systems to the internet through the WOW! home network is as simple as entering your personal passcode that was provided by our technician during the initial setup . WOW!’s wireless home networking solution lets you have internet connectivity to multiple computers and anywhere in the house, on your deck, in your basement, wherever you need it.
The biggest challenge users face when installing home networking on their own is the setup and support of the home network and deciding what equipment to buy from the local retail outlet. As someone that understands home networking and routers, I’m always the guy friends and co-workers call to come over and help them set up the router they just purchased. Then, when they have a problem with the router later, which inevitably happens, I get another call to come over and help troubleshoot the problem.
With WOW! wireless home networking, you won’t need to rely on the knowledge of a “go-to-guy” at work. We make it simple. As long as your equipment is wireless ready, you won’t need to buy any extra equipment to connect all your devices. WOW!s advanced modem works wonderfully with all your wireless equipment and will also serve as the source for WOW! phone service for customers that have both phone and internet service. A WOW! technician will setup and configure the wireless modem and connect all your equipment at the time of installation, so all you have to do is start enjoying your service. If after the installation, you buy a new gaming system or laptop computer, and you need help with the set up, you can simply call WOW!’s 24/7 support line for help. You won’t get this kind of service and support when you purchase a router from an electronics store!

The internet can be a valuable educational tool as well as provide hours of entertainment. Children can use the Internet for homework assistance or to research topics of interest. Unfortunately, the Internet can also be a dangerous place for children. It is up to parents to educate themselves and their children about the Internet and its potential dangers.
Benefits of the Internet
The Internet offers the following benefits:
- Contains many good sources of educational information
- Provides up-to-date news articles from around the globe
- Allows access to entertaining and educational games
- Enables communication with friends and relatives through chat and email
Dangers of the Internet
Parents need to be aware of the following potential Internet dangers:
- Credibility. There are no restrictions to what someone can post on a web site. Therefore, not all internet sites are credible or contain accurate information. When using the Internet for homework assistance, be sure to teach your children to verify information using multiple sources.
- Online stalkers or predators. Unfortunately, there are individuals who use the Internet in a malicious way, or as a way to harass others. Some users will pose as children in order to gain the trust of younger users.
- Unsolicited email or “spam.” These messages usually come from unknown senders and may contain inappropriate content or images or may try to solicit money or other personal information.
- Questionable content. It is very easy to access sites that contain sexually explicit, violent or other inappropriate materials. Even a simple online search can turn up a number of these sites.
- Easy access to online shopping. The Internet makes it easy to browse through auction or retail sites. With a credit card number, users can purchase goods and services with just the click of the mouse.
- Viruses. Some Internet sites can cause viruses to be downloaded to your computer, resulting in the lost information and other damage.
General Internet Safety Tips
If your children will be using the computer and the Internet, keep the following safety tips in mind:
- Learn about the Internet and be aware of both its benefits and risks. Talk to your children about the risks so that they can also be more informed users.
- Stay involved and informed about your child’s Internet use. There are programs that you can install that can monitor computer activity or block access to certain Internet sites. You can also stay on top of computer use by placing the computer in a common area in your home.
- Set rules for Internet use. These rules may include limiting you children to certain Internet sites, restricting the use of chat rooms, setting aside certain times of the day for computer use and limiting the number of hours that can be spent online.
- Keep all email accounts in your name and make sure that you have access to all accounts. Sharing an email account among family members can be a good solution an can allow everyone to keep in touch with other relatives.
- Talk with your children about the dangers of chatting and email. Insist that you children never give out personal information or schedule a face-to-face meeting with anyone they met online.
- Establish rules for online shopping and purchases.
- Teach your children how to exit uncomfortable situations if you allow them to use chat rooms. Also teach them to inform you about any questionable email that they receive.

The 2010 Winter Olympics will be held in Vancouver beginning on February 12, 2010 and NBC will be covering the games. With so many events occurring at the same time it is impossible to air all of them, even on multiple channels, so NBC will be providing content online. Powered by Microsoft’s Silverlight technology, the video player will present video in stunning high-definition quality and offer DVR-style controls allowing users to pause and rewind live Olympic video with enhanced navigation and more.
NBCOlympics.com will provide more than 400 hours of live event competition. The site will also offer more than 1,000 hours of on-demand access to full-event replays from broadcast and host-feed coverage of all 15 sports on the Winter Games program. It will also include extensive highlights such as event recaps, best-of montages, commentator analysis, and athlete-specific clips.
Much of the online content will require a user to authenticate with NBC to show that they have a supporting TV service with a cable or satellite provider. The requirements for viewing the authenticated content online is that you must have CNBC and MSNBC as part of your television subscription. The good news is that all WOW! Cable packages, except the Limited Basic package, include these channels so almost all WOW! Cable customers can view the NBC online content.
WOW! Cable customers can register online at NBCOlympics.com now through February 28, 2010. Simply choose WOW! from the drop down menu on the video registration page. The registration is a one-time process and as a registered user, you will have access to more than 1,000 hours of content. Once registered, you can simply log in with your WOW! user name and password to view the content. Also look for more Olympic content on your WOW! Customer Homepage in the Olympics section.
Enjoy the games!

In my case it doesn’t matter how fine the pen, my handwriting is still barely legible at best. The ability to type my correspondence is a treat for me and anyone that has to read my messages!
As far as what is satisfying to me in the area of newer technology, I would have to say that digital cameras are at the top of my list. I can’t believe we used to use film and had to take it in and get it developed a few pictures at a time. With a 2 GB micro-SD card I can take over 900 pictures and view or share them immediately.
