These are just some of the new cable TV shows coming out soon.  This should be enough to keep your WOW! DVR busy!

The Ins and Outs of Moving a Telephone Number

Not having been involved with the phone business  before WOW! became a phone service provider six years ago, I would never have guessed how complicated the phone business can be.  The acronymns alone (RBOC, LNP,  PSAP, NPA NXX)  needed its own chapter in the training manual.  Even trying to figure out, in advance of  the phone product launch, what service problems customers would be calling in for help with was a challenge.  After all this time though, we have all the acronyms and troubleshooting stuff under control.  One thing that is still a challenge in the phone world, though, is educating customers on the whole issue of “porting”, or moving a telephone number.

When there wasn’t a choice of phone service providers, there wasn’t much  switching going on, no tricky maneuvers to undertake.  Now though, with choices, people want to try other service providers, and moving telephone numbers from one provider to another can be a bit tricky.  Without getting into all the nitty-gritty details of the complicated behind-the -scenes processes, the important thing for people to know about telephone number portability is that they must let their current service provider know of their intention to move, not disconnect, their telephone number.  If a telephone number is disconnected instead of “ported over” to the new provider, it’s likely that number will be lost and your new service provider will not be able to get it back for you.  Each service provide has their own “inventory” of telephone numbers, so if the number is disconnected, they own it, and it goes back into their inventory.

Another potentially tricky scenario is people who are moving and want to keep their telephone number.  The first consideration is the rate center. The rate center refers to the geographical area for the telephone local exchange service.  Moves within the rate center are okay; moves outside the rate center ane not okay and will require a new telephone number.  This one is a tough one for people to accept, especially if they’ve had a telephone number for a very long time.  But, with  rate centers tied geographically to specific addresses and addressess being critical to the routing of 911 calls to the correct Public Service Answering Point (PSAP), this is a rule that can not be broken.

Finally, there are people who are moving and, at the same time, want to switch to another service provider.  Even if the move is within the rate center, this is not allowed allowed due to the complexities of establishing  accurate 911 Service.  So, the only option for movers and switchers is to switch before or after moving.

I’ve tried to simplify a really complicated process and quite honestly, it’s difficult to understand why it has to be so complicated, but it is.  I hope these tips help shed a little light on the process and will help you to avoid any hassles.  Luckily for the consumer, once your phone service is switched or moved, and is up and running, you don’t have to worry about it anymore.

Creating a WOW! Moment–Day One!

From the wall to the window the training room is filled with a little anxiety and lots of excitement, along with the faint smell of Clorox and mountain sunshine. We are fortunate to have a million dollar view of Pikes Peak and the front range of the Rocky Mountains. Each workstation is prepped in anticipation of the new employee’s arrival. New Hire manuals are neatly arranged—ready for use, along with pens, highlighters and note pads.
Each new employee is seated in the training room until all new hires are present and accounted for. We introduce ourselves and speak about our background, how we first became interested in training at WOW!, and how invigorating and important it has been to each of us. After the Trainers’ introductions, the New Hire journey begins with a quick tour of the facilities. We show them the offices of the directors, managers, the different departments at the Colorado Call Center ( CCC), and end the tour with the sparkling, brightly-lit case filled with our many J.D. Powers awards. We convey the message that WOW! is a different type of company.
Meanwhile back in the classroom…by getting to know the New Hires and establishing rapport, awkwardness is reduced and the classroom becomes more relaxed. We express our interest in learning their names with a dry-erase tent card and marker set in front of their manuals. Recognizing them and knowing their names encourages interaction and lets them know they will be active participants in class. On the first day, the exchange of information starts with an “ice-breaker” activity. Our preferred activity is called “Two Truths and a Lie,” in which background information along with two true facts and one untrue fact is shared with the class and everyone tries to guess the lie. The activity definitely helps the New Hires get to know each other a little more and enjoy class. We also reveal something about ourselves, such as or our travel adventures, favorite foods, or outdoor activities.
After the ice-breaker, the Trainer and the New Hire class agree on the ground rules for learning, individual expectations and desired outcomes. Once all expectations are set and administrative matters are addressed, we move immediately into the first topic, Core Values. This helps introduce WOW!’s culture and indicates that the training at WOW! is worthwhile, well-organized, and well-paced.
Thus, concludes Day One in the life of a Trainer at the CCC. What are your two truths and a lie?
